Online Databases
Online databases are accessed through the Web, but, unlike websites, these databases are only available by subscription (we pay a fee to access them). Although the format of the online databases is electronic, which allows for easy updating, their publishing process is the same as for printed matter, which means that the information they include is checked and approved by specialists in the field.
Databases can be organized as follows:
- Reference databases :: often published by an authoritative print source
(e.g. Britannica, World Book)
- Periodical databases :: collections of journal, magazine, and newspaper articles
(e.g. EbscoHost, InfoTrac)
- Specialized databases :: reference and periodical articles organized by subject
(e.g. Access Science, SIRS Renaissance)
Every database is organized slightly differently, and a librarians can help you to navigate them successfully.
