Refining your Topic
After you have found some background information on your topic, you need to decide whether
your topic is too broad or too narrow. It helps to write out the thesis statement (or at least
a question or set of questions) in order to see if you can support it adequately. You will
probably rewrite the thesis as you continue your research on the topic, but a working thesis
is a helpful step in the process.
If your topic is too broad, it is necessary to think of a more focused topic for your
research. This means that you have too much material, or that you would need to look up
a vast array of materials in order to cover all the points in your thesis.
If you find that your topic is too narrow and that you cannot find enough material on it,
it is necessary to expand the scope of your question and consider it in a broader context.
