Search Engines

Google is the most well-known search engine, but it is not the only one. Depending on what you are searching, different search engines can be more helpful than others because each uses a slightly different way of searching.

Pick a topic and then search each of the following search engines to see how your results differ:
  • Alltheweb :: uses many strong searching techniques and is refreshed frequently

  • Clusty :: groups results according to meaning, sentence structure, and a bit of human touch (owned and maintained by Vivisimo)

  • Google :: crawls the Web and matches the pages that have the terms in search query

  • KartOO :: visually displays the connections of the search results

  • Scirus :: searches science specific topics

  • Teoma :: locates information by subject and collects pages that are related

  • Vivisimo :: searches efficiently by using a clustering technique
